Michael Flatley becomes a father

LORD Of The Dance star Michael Flatley announced his wife Niamh gave birth to a baby boy at Cork University Maternity Hospital last week.

“We are overjoyed,” said the entertainer who came to international attention through the Irish dance extravaganza Riverdance.

“Both mum and baby are doing well. I cannot wait to get Niamh and our baby son home.”

The couple applauded the care provided at the hospital by all the medical staff including Professor John Higgins.

The multi-millionaire dancer had maintained an overnight vigil by his wife’s bedside after she had gone into labour shortly before 9pm last Wednesday.

The baby boy was born by Caesarean section just two days overdue. He weighed in at 8lbs 1oz.

Ecstatic new dad Michael revealed his new son is to be called Michael — after his own father. He told the media how 78-year-old Sligo-born Michael Snr was in tears after being informed he had a new grandson born in Ireland.

He said: “My father left Ireland with nothing as a young man because there was no work here at the time but after a lifetime in Chicago he’s never lost his accent or his love for the auld sod.”

Michael and Niamh have worked together for many years performing together in Riverdance, Lord Of The Dance, Feet Of Flames and now Celtic Tiger.

They announced their engagement last June and were married in a ceremony in Fermoy, Cork last October. He said he was looking forward to taking his 32-year-old wife and new baby boy back to his Irish home.
