Pub puzzle

Immigrant workers in Ireland find the dominance of the pub culture “very strange”.

According to a survey by the National Action Plan of Racism immigrants in Ireland hold the view that while most Irish people were pleasant and friendly the country was very expensive, surprisingly dirty and has too many pubs.

One participant in the survey said: “Here in Tullamore in Co. Offaly I think there are 42 pubs or something. But there is no swimming pool, no theatre and no art centre.”

It also showed that while immigrant workers are generally seen as a positive influence in the country attitudes to asylum seekers are far more hostile.

The number of people who have had contact with immigrants has increased from 36 per cent to 57 per cent in the last three years, and this has led to a 10 per cent increase in positive perceptions.
