Winning Post

Some of the best handicap chasers in Britain will feature at Kempton on Saturday for the Racing Post Chase.

This is always one of the toughest races of the season to call and punters are advised to choose a horse which is not likely to line-up at Cheltenham as trainers would prefer to win at the festival than win this race. Therefore there may be one or two horses using this race to get fit for the festival.

Another guide for punters is to always try to find a horse in the middle of the weights for a big handicap. The top weights will probably tire near the end while the bottom weights will usually find at least one horse too good. With that in mind the ideal weight for a horse in a race like this is about 10 and a half stone and all of the horses worth considering in this contest fall into that category.

One horse which is likely to line-up and looking to win is Phar From Trouble. This fellow is trained on the Curragh in Ireland by Christy Roche and won his comeback race recently. That win should leave him fit and raring to go for this contest. He gets in off a nice weight so everything looks to be in his favour. This horse has won some very nice races in Ireland particularly when carrying a big weight and he will go very close in this contest.

The Phillip Hobbs-trained Zabenz is a horse with the right profile to win a race of this type. He won some excellent races last season and is an ultra-consistent performer. He jumps well and while some of his more recent runs haven’t been hugely impressive he has come nicely down the handicap and will run a very big race on Saturday.

Few trainers are in better form at the moment than Nicky Henderson — he enters Crozan for this race. The quality of this animal’s jumping is a major concern but aside from that he has the form to win this race.

Crozan is likely either to fall at the start of the race or be in with a winning chance at the finish. If you like a risk and a horse with decent odds then this is the fellow to go for.

The selection though is Phar From Trouble. This horse is coming good at the right time of the season and will be a decent price in a race of this nature.

Each way punters should consider the Gary Moore trained Tikram and Henry Daly’s Briary Fox.

Happy Punting!
