Good week... Bad week...

MVP award to...

GAA players. In the week when player welfare and grant support was the hot topic in GAA cirlces, the Armagh senior footballers joined a long list of teams heading to warmer climates in preparation for the Championship.

The hot weather training camp is aimed at teams who believe they will last the distance of the May to September Championship season.

As Joe Kernan’s side flew to Spain, Kerry departed for Portugal while the Mayo footballers and Waterford hurlers are also convinced of the benefits of a training camp in the sun.

The Meath senior football panel also travel to Portugal next week for a training camp in preparation for their Leinster SFC first-round clash with Kildare on May

Red card to...

TYRONE footballers. Tipped as one of three teams alongside Kerry and Dublin to lift Sam in 2007, Tyrone’s injury crisis has worsened in the run-up to their Ulster Senior Football Championship quarter-final against Fermanagh on May 20.

Owen Mulligan of Cookstown went off injured during the clash with Donaghmore while Clann na nGael’s Stephen O’Neill limped off against Kildress with a hamstring injury.

They join Sean Cavanagh (right) on the treatment table, who travelled to Birmingham recently to visit a rehabilitation centre for his injured foot.

Long-term injury victim Brian McGuigan suffered another setback in his recovery from a leg break but is expected to return for the Fermanagh tie. But with a lack of firepower in the forward line Tyrone may well have to give up on Sam for another year.
