| Rebels roused from slumber for late
revival Two
struggling football teams showed the reason for their woes as they served
up a match of poor quality at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday, with Cork condemned
to Division Two and Limerick plunging the depths to Division Three football
next term.
The final scoreline certainly flattered Cork, who trailed for most of
the match but produced an excellent surge in the final third of the match
to claim victory.
Billy Morgan’s Rebels had a strong wind at their backs in the first
half, but managed only to convert this into a 0-8 to 0-7 interval lead.
James Masters and Conor McCarthy hit the bulk of those scores for the
Rebels, while Micheal Reidy was instrumental for Limerick.
The second half turned on two events. Reidy converted a penalty shortly
after the restart to put Limerick into the lead, but the Treatymen lost
influential midfielder John Galvin to injury on 40 minutes and were unable
to live with Cork after that.
Billy Morgan’s men outscored Limerick by 0-7 to 0-1 in the final
quarter of the match to seal the win, but there were few people willing
to celebrate as the Rebels, once the coming force of Gaelic football,
drop into the second tier next season.
Limerick are overly-reliant on a handful of big players, and when they
lost the best of them, John Galvin, they struggled but should find Division
Three much more to their liking next season. |
