| Three-goal blitz puts Caffrey’s men
in charge The real Dublin finally stood up on Sunday handing
out a royal roasting to Fermanagh and showing just why they are still
one of the best teams in the country. The win offers the Metropolitans
an outside chance of finishing in the division’s top four while
Fermanagh now look doomed for relegation.
Points from Conal Keaney and a well-taken goal from Thomas Quinn helped
Paul Caffrey’s side into a 1-7 to 0-3 interval lead while Eamonn
McKeever and Peter Sherry raised white flags for Fermanagh.
The Ulster side are rooted to the bottom of Division 1A and the reasons
they have struggled this year became all too apparent in the second-half.
A hungry Dublin were first to every ball and ended the game as a contest
three minutes after the restart when Kevin Bonner reacted swiftly to a
loose ball on the edge of the square to hit the Metropolitans’ second
goal.
When young substitute Diarmuid Connolly netted Dublin’s third goal
after 15 minutes of the second-half fans began to stream out of Parnell
Park.
Conal Keaney — who finished with a personal tally of 0-5 and David
O’Callaghan completed the second-half scoring for Dublin who have
now recorded back-to-back wins to boost their confidence and dispel any
talk of a crisis in the camp.
For the Ernesiders the ability to regroup and raise confidence levels
will be crucial ahead of the Championship.
Dublin manager Paul Caffrey said afterwards that he and the rest of the
Dublin management team were pleased with the win. “It’s good
to get a confidence boost like that,” he said.
The Leinster champions face Mayo next week knowing that a win over John
O’Mahony’s men would see them in pole position for qualification
to the latter stages of the competition. |
