A walk on the wild side
By Malcolm Rogers
On
Foot Holidays has a newly expanded programme of self-guided walking holidays
now available for 2008. A new route in Hungary explores a quiet range of
hills known as the Balaton Uplands and has been designed with the serial
ambler in mind, with walking days ranging from 6-8 hours.
The well-established
route in East Slovenia has recently been completely reworked and is now
GPS-referenced to aid navigation. It’s a spectacular, pastoral walk
which explores a beguiling patchwork of hills and vineyards, with much
wine-tasting along the way.
For those less sure of their navigational skills, On Foot’s only
guided walk to the stunning Julian Alps of Slovenia has now become a firm
fixture with two dates being offered in 2008 (departing June 7 and September
13).
The route is also available for self-formed groups of 10 or more people
at other times of the year. This walk is led by Janez Golob, On Foot’s
very experienced and immensely-informed route advisor for other Slovenian
routes.
The self-guided routes are also now available as short breaks for five
or six nights (with the exception of Mount Pelion and the Lycian Way)
to suit those who are keen to walk but have limited time.
And for for those keen on reducing their carbon footprint (or, if you
just don’t fancy the mayhem that makes up the average airpor these
days) On Foot Holidays have linked in their routes with rail travel.
As rail lines across Europe are upgraded (and you can now reach mainland
Europe from St. Pancras), journey times are shortened, making the train
a very feasible and civilised way of getting there. For instance you can
get to the start of the Rhine-Moselle walk from London in just seven hours.
Simon Scutt, director of On Foot Holidays said: “Hungary, outside
of Budapest, is rarely visited and our new route discovers the exotic
volcanic landscape of the Balaton Uplands. Take the slow boat to Tihany
on the placid waters of Lake Balaton, a vineyard lunch with the Meszaros
family in their vineyard and enjoy a night in the rural sophistication
of the Kali Art inn.”
