Abbeyleix is one of the finest planned estate towns in the country with spacious tree lined streets, picturesque period houses. Situated in the Heart of Ireland on the main Dublin Cork road, the town was founded by the de Vesci Family in the mid eighteenth century near the site of a 12th century Cistercian Abbey. Visit the award winning exhibition centre, "Heritage House" which depicts local settlement - the rock of Dunamase, the largest Norman stronghold in Ireland, the local Cistercian Abbey, the de Vesci Family development.
