Galbally

At the Western end of the Glen of Aherlow is the village of Galbally, which is overshadowed by the majestick Galty Mountains. A national award winner (1994) in the Bord Failte - Irish Tourist Board Tidy town's competition, it has a wonderful village square with the War of Independence memorial commanding centre. Just 1.6km from Galbally, on the Glen of Aherlow road stands Moor Abbey, the remains of a 15th century Franciscan Abbey. Legend has it that when three friars were beheaded in 1570, they shed no blood. Activities for the area include horse riding, angling on the river Aherlow, hillwalking, handball, basketball, tennis, shooting. Traditional music is available in local pubs, also darts and card playing. Events include an annual Garden Fete.
