Fethard

This little town was important in medieval times as an Anglo Norman settlement that late became a corporate town. An Augustinian priory was in existence here until its suppression in the 16th century. In 1376 Edward I granted certain revenue rights to the corporation to wall the town, and a similar grant was made by Henry IV. In 1650 Cromwell appeared before the walls with his army, and after a short resistance the town surrendered on honourable terms.
