Portumna is one of Galway's most attractive towns and is ideally situated by the River Shannon and Lough Derg to avail of all the attractions these fine waters have to offer. Portumna Forest Park provides another welcome amenity to this important markettown, for its mile long sign-posted trail guides you through a marvellous world of common and exotic trees. If you go quietly, you need not lack company for there are sixteen species of wild animals and eighty-five varieties of birds living happily beneath the green mantle. The name Portumna itself derives from the Irish Port Omna - "the landing place of the oak tree" and down through history many warring factionslanded here after crossing the Shannon.
