In the very heart of the GAELTACHT or Irish-speaking area of County Galway, its claim to renown is that the Irish Writer and revolutionary leader P.H. Pearse had a cottage here where he spent his summers perfecting his knowledge of Irish Language and lore, his writings were much inspired by the area. The cottage, burned down during the troubles, has been restored as a national monument and is open to visitors daily from June to September.
