Tuam lies 32km to the north of Galway City and is the major town in the North Galway/Mid Connacht region. It is a thriving industrial and commercial town with a well established agricultural hinterland. Tuam is twinned with the Bavarian town of Straubing. Tuam is one of the most historic towns in the West of Ireland. Today Tuam has an urban population of approximately 6,000 with a further 27,500 within a 16km radius. Saint Jarlath established a monastery and school here in the sixth century A.D. and the O'Connors, High Kings of Ireland who made Tuam their capital, endowed learning. That educational and ecclesiastical tradition has remained.
